A Voice in the Dark, Now Silenced
The Hagerstown, Maryland community is grieving the unexpected loss of Derek Ray Bish, age 33, a devoted Emergency Communications Specialist whose calm voice helped save countless lives. Derek passed away on July 24, 2025, leaving behind a profound void in the hearts of his family, colleagues, and all those who knew his compassionate spirit. He was not only a skilled professional, but a quiet hero behind the scenes—reassuring strangers in crisis, guiding first responders to action, and mentoring the next generation of 911 specialists.
For nearly a decade, Derek served as the calm in the chaos, rising through the ranks of Washington County’s 911 Communications Center. His promotion to Emergency Communications Specialist III and later ECS Shift Supervisor reflected more than skill—it showed integrity, focus, and a deeply rooted desire to protect others. Those who worked beside him recall not only his technical excellence but the grace with which he handled the pressure, and how he never failed to lift others with a word of kindness or encouragement.
A Life Devoted to Service and Empathy
Born on October 17, 1991, in the Hagerstown area, Derek always felt a calling to serve. His career in emergency communications wasn’t just a job—it was a mission, one that he carried out with humility and heart. The public may not have seen his face, but they heard his steady voice in their most frightening moments. And for those in the dispatch center, Derek was the rock: dependable, brilliant, and always willing to lend his knowledge and warmth to the team.
His leadership was quiet but strong, and he took special pride in mentoring new dispatchers—offering guidance not just in procedure, but in compassion. His legacy isn’t just in the lives he saved; it’s in the people he inspired. His coworkers describe him as a teacher, a protector, and above all, a friend.
Remembering Derek: Family, Laughter, and Love
Outside the dispatch center, Derek cherished the simple joys of life. He loved hiking the hills of Hagerstown, sharing laughs over board games, enjoying the changing Maryland seasons, and creating lasting memories with friends and family. His laughter filled rooms, his empathy touched hearts, and his presence brought comfort to many.
Derek is survived by his loving parents, Dennis Ray Bish and Connie Dean Litz (Oxendine), and his siblings Brian, Jennifer, Denise, Allison, and Cody—each left with cherished memories of their beloved brother. He also leaves behind a wide circle of friends, colleagues, and community members who will never forget his generous spirit.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, August 11, 2025, at 1:00 PM at the Washington County Public Safety Training Center, followed by a reception at 2:00 PM. All are welcome to honor a man who gave so much of himself to others.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for memorial contributions to local fire departments or first-responder organizations in Derek’s name—reflecting the selfless values that defined his life.
Derek Bish served with his heart. Let his memory live on in every act of courage, every kind word, and every call answered in service to others.
