Alton, IL – The community mourns the loss of Barbara K. Winsel, a beloved mother, grandmother, and friend, who passed away peacefully on Thursday, August 21, 2025, at the age of 78. Surrounded by love, Barbara took her final breath at La Bella of Alton Nursing Center, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, resilience, and devotion to her family.
Born on January 4, 1947, in Wood River, Illinois, Barbara lived a life rooted in love and service. The daughter of Roy and Velma McGhee, she grew up with strong family values that shaped her into a nurturing and selfless woman. Barbara worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant, dedicating countless years to caring for others through home health and nursing facilities. Her gentle hands and kind heart brought comfort to those in need, leaving an unforgettable mark on everyone she encountered.

Barbara’s life was not only about work—it was about joy, creativity, and family. She had a passion for crocheting, quilting, reading, and even playing video games, finding happiness in both tradition and modern pastimes. Her greatest joy, however, came from being surrounded by her loved ones. Whether sharing stories, crafting handmade treasures, or enjoying quiet moments, Barbara created memories that her family will cherish forever.
She is survived by two devoted daughters: Sherry (David) Brewer of Godfrey and Tammy Holiday of Granite City, along with three caring brothers: George, Sammy, and Kenneth Holiday, all from Granite City. Her love extended to numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and even one great-great grandchild, who will carry her memory forward with pride and love.
Though her heart was full of joy, Barbara endured profound loss, including the passing of her beloved daughter, Donna K. Bryant, and two brothers and a sister. Through every trial, she remained strong—a testament to her unyielding spirit and faith.

Visitation to honor Barbara’s life will be held on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service at 12:00 p.m. at Wojstrom Funeral Home & Crematory in Granite City, Illinois. Following the service, she will be laid to rest at Sunset Hill Memorial Estates in Glen Carbon, IL.
