Remembering John Ott: A Life of Love, Strength, and Generosity
The Hollidaysburg community mourns the loss of a beloved soul, John R. Ott, who passed away peacefully at home early Sunday morning, August 24, 2025, at the age of 69. Born and raised in Hollidaysburg, John’s life was defined by his unwavering dedication to family, his passion for the outdoors, and his genuine kindness toward everyone he met.
John was the son of the late Lawrence and Catherine V. (Brawley) Ott. He is survived by his devoted partner, Robin Lear, his two sons, Joseph Ott of Altoona and John Ott of Colorado, and a loving family that includes grandchildren Damian and Catherine Ott, great-granddaughter Aurora Hughes, and numerous siblings, nieces, and nephews. His presence in their lives was a constant source of comfort and strength.
A Man Who Loved the Outdoors and His Community
A 1974 graduate of Hollidaysburg Area Senior High, John also attended the Greater Altoona Career and Technology Center before beginning his career as a skilled machinist for Gampe Machine & Tool Company in Hollidaysburg. Known for his dedication and craftsmanship, John earned respect not just for his work but for his humility and generosity.
Beyond his professional life, John found peace and happiness in nature. An avid outdoorsman, he loved hunting, fishing, archery, and wrestling. He was an active member of the Frankstown Sportsman Club and attended the Juniata Valley Gospel Church, where his faith gave him strength throughout life’s challenges. For John, the outdoors was more than a hobby—it was a way of connecting with the world and those he loved most.
A Legacy of Kindness and Love That Lives On
John was a man who left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him. His kindness was boundless, his laughter infectious, and his love for family unwavering. He was the one you could count on in times of need, the steady presence that made others feel safe and valued.
Although John’s physical presence is no longer with us, his memory will forever live in the hearts of those he touched. His family finds solace in knowing that his life was full of love, purpose, and cherished moments.
