It is with heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of Valerie Sue DeHart Lawson, age 58, of Stuart, Virginia. Valerie passed away at Woltz Hospice House in Dobson, North Carolina, surrounded by the love and care she so freely gave to others throughout her life. Born in Patrick County to James N. DeHart and Anna D. Fuqua DeHart, Valerie was a devoted mother, nana, daughter, and sister who touched the lives of all who knew her.

Her life was marked not only by her strong family bonds but by her unwavering dedication to caregiving—a role that defined much of her time and spirit. Valerie’s passion for helping others was evident in everything she did, and her presence brought comfort and strength to those around her.

A Tender Caregiver and a Spirit of Joy

Valerie’s natural kindness and generosity were the pillars of her character. As a caregiver, she offered much more than medical support; she provided warmth, compassion, and hope during some of the most difficult moments in people’s lives. She was always ready to lend a helping hand or an attentive ear.

Beyond caregiving, Valerie found joy in the simple and exhilarating pleasures of life. Her love for gardening was a testament to her nurturing soul, growing beauty and life from the earth with the same care she gave to her family and friends. She also cherished the thrill of fast cars, a passion that brought excitement and freedom to her days.

Surrounded by Love, Forever Remembered

Valerie is survived by her longtime boyfriend, Pete Goard of Stuart, two daughters, Melissa Sessor and Kelley Lawson, both of Stuart, and her two beloved grandchildren, Lillie Ann Risaliti and Jason Bam Risaliti of Axton. She also leaves behind her sister and brother-in-law, Amy “Moo” Louise Wilson (Larry) of Roanoke, and brother and sister-in-law, Matt DeHart (Dana) of Sandy Ridge, North Carolina.

She was preceded in death by her father, James N. DeHart, her son, Bobby Wayne Lawson, and sister, Lorrie Ann DeHart Pack.

Valerie’s family remembers her as a source of strength, a beacon of unconditional love, and a constant supporter of those in need. Her legacy is one of devotion—to family, to friends, and to the countless people whose lives she brightened.

Though Valerie’s passing leaves a profound sadness, her memory is a shining light of love and care that will never fade. Her spirit lives on in the hearts of those she loved and in the garden of memories she helped nurture.
