Born in Northern Uganda during a time of intense civil unrest, Odoch Robert Gunda’s life began in hardship. Growing up amid the devastation caused by the Lord’s Resistance Army conflict, Robert bore witness to violence, displacement, and trauma far beyond what any child should ever endure. These early scars would follow him into adulthood, carving deep emotional and psychological wounds. He carried within him the weight of war — not just in memory, but in spirit — yet somehow managed to rise and rebuild his life in a foreign land.
Relocating to San Diego, California, offered Robert the promise of peace, but the shadows of his past were not easily shaken. He battled PTSD and persistent mental health challenges for much of his adult life, often in silence. Despite this, he was known by friends and neighbors as a kind-hearted, soft-spoken individual with a gentle smile and a passion for community work, especially among fellow African immigrants and trauma survivors.
