Judge Frank Caprio Providence Obituary: Judge Frank Caprio Dies at 88, Global Sensation and “Nicest Judge in the World” Leaves Legacy of Kindness and Justice

A Gentle Giant of Justice: Judge Frank Caprio Passes at 88

The world has lost not just a judge, but a rare soul who turned the courtroom into a place of healing and humanity. Judge Frank Caprio of Providence and Narragansett passed away peacefully on August 20th, 2025, at the age of 88. Known around the globe for his heartwarming decisions and unmatched kindness, Judge Caprio died surrounded by the love of his life—his wife Joyce—and their devoted family.

Judge Caprio wasn’t just a man in a robe; he was a symbol of hope. Through the Emmy-nominated show Caught in Providence, millions came to know his compassionate rulings. Whether forgiving traffic violations with humor or giving second chances to those down on their luck, he taught the world that justice should not only be fair—but merciful.

A Life of Service Built from Humble Beginnings

Born to Italian immigrants Antonio and Filomena Caprio in Federal Hill, Frank grew up with values that shaped his life: faith, education, hard work, and community. He attended Central High School, where he earned statewide recognition in wrestling, and put himself through Providence College by working three jobs. He later became a government teacher and National Guard member before earning his law degree from Suffolk University at night while coaching wrestling by day.

At just 25 years old, he unseated a sitting City Council President, marking the beginning of a lifelong dedication to public service. His legal career blossomed into a successful family-run law firm, the Caprio Building becoming a pillar of Providence’s legal community. Judge Caprio mentored countless young professionals and remained active in Rhode Island politics for decades, always finding ways to give back.

A Legacy That Transcends Generations and Borders

In 1985, Mayor Joseph Paolino, Jr. appointed Frank to the Providence Municipal Court. For 38 years, he turned a courtroom into a global classroom, broadcasting his message of compassion to tens of millions. Judge Caprio’s sincerity earned him a global following—over 26 million on social media and more than 10 billion video views. He recently published a best-selling memoir, Compassion in the Court, and traveled the world speaking at humanitarian events, including receiving the Mother Teresa Award for Social Justice.

Judge Caprio is survived by his wife of 62 years, Joyce, their five children, seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He instilled in them values of service, humility, and love. He also chaired Rhode Island’s Board of Governors for Higher Education and established multiple scholarships for underprivileged students.

Visiting hours will be held August 28 at the Rhode Island Convention Center. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place August 29 at The Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Filomena Fund at the Rhode Island Foundation.

Though Judge Caprio has left the bench, his spirit lives on in the hearts of millions he touched. His message was simple and eternal: “Be nice. Help people.” And that he did—every single day.
