Katelynn Strate Obituary, Death; Alleged road rage shooter charged with murder after 17-year-old expecting mother dies

Tragedy on the Road: Pregnant Teen Killed in Apparent Road Rage Incident

Louisiana is mourning a heartbreaking tragedy after a 17-year-old pregnant teen, Katelynn Strate, was fatally shot in the head during a road rage altercation in Tangipahoa Parish over the weekend. The suspect, Barry West, 54, is now facing a second-degree murder charge in connection with the shooting. The incident occurred Sunday morning near Ponchatoula, and Katelynn tragically succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday after being removed from life support.

Strate was seven months pregnant at the time of the incident. After being rushed to the hospital, doctors delivered her baby through an emergency C-section. Miraculously, the baby survived and remains under medical care. The Sheriff’s Office confirmed that the newborn is stable and being closely monitored. The family has been left devastated, now navigating the dual tragedy of losing a daughter and becoming guardians to a premature infant born from unimaginable circumstances.

Violent Confrontation Turns Fatal: Details of the Shooting Emerge

Authorities say the altercation began as an escalating road rage incident on North Hoover Road. Both drivers — West in a Dodge truck and the vehicle carrying Strate, a Ford Expedition — were reportedly tailgating and brake-checking each other. According to the Sheriff’s Office, West fired his weapon into the Ford, striking Strate in the head. She was one of three people in the vehicle at the time.

West allegedly claimed to investigators that he believed he was being shot at and fired in self-defense. However, detectives found no evidence of a weapon in the Ford and no indication that any shots were fired by the other vehicle. Despite social media speculation, the Sheriff’s Office clarified there is no official record confirming that Barry West was ever employed as a deputy with their department.

As of now, the case remains under active investigation. The Sheriff’s Office has urged any witnesses or individuals with further information to come forward by contacting the Criminal Investigations Division at 985-902-2088.

A Life Cut Short, A Legacy of Love: Katelynn’s Final Gift

As her family grieves the unimaginable loss, they’ve chosen to honor Katelynn’s memory by turning their pain into hope for others — the teen became an organ donor, giving life even as hers was taken far too soon. Katelynn’s family shared that while she won’t have the chance to raise her child, her spirit lives on through the baby she saved and the lives her organ donation will touch.

Funeral arrangements for Katelynn Strate are currently pending, and the community continues to rally around her loved ones in their time of sorrow. The loss of this vibrant young girl — a daughter, a soon-to-be mother, a friend — has sent shockwaves through Louisiana and beyond.
