Ukraine is mourning the loss of one of its most prominent political figures after a shocking act of violence claimed the life of Andriy Parubiy in the western city of Lviv. According to officials, the former parliamentary speaker was shot dead in broad daylight on Saturday, sending shockwaves through a country already burdened by war.
Parubiy, 54, was an influential figure in Ukraine’s modern history. He served as parliamentary speaker from 2016 to 2019, led calls for closer ties with the European Union during the 2013–14 Euromaidan protests, and was secretary of Ukraine’s National Security and Defence Council during a period of intense national crisis in 2014. The Prosecutor General’s office confirmed that a lone gunman fired several shots, killing Parubiy instantly before fleeing the scene. Former President Petro Poroshenko described Parubiy’s death as “a shot fired at the heart of Ukraine,” lauding his role in strengthening the country’s defenses. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha called him “a patriot and statesman who made an enormous contribution to the defense of Ukraine’s freedom, independence and sovereignty.”
