A Shepherd’s Final Sermon: Elkin Mourns the Passing of Reverend Billy “Bill” Jo Jenkins
The town of Elkin, North Carolina is reeling from the heartbreaking loss of one of its most beloved figures — Reverend Billy “Bill” Jo Jenkins, who passed away on Saturday, August 30, 2025, at the age of 74. A man of unwavering faith and deep compassion, Bill was not just a preacher — he was a pillar of the community, a mentor to generations, a coach, a teacher, and a friend to all.
Born on March 30, 1951, to Cephus L. and Mattie Mae Childress Jenkins, Bill dedicated his entire adult life to spreading the Gospel and serving others. His incredible 55-year ministry, including 34 years at Welcome Valley Baptist Church, touched thousands of lives. He also pastored five other congregations, never ceasing to give his heart to the Lord and his flock. His sermons weren’t just words — they were life lessons, full of grace and wisdom that inspired everyone who heard them.
From the Classroom to the Wrestling Mat: A Mentor in Every Sense
Bill’s devotion extended beyond the pulpit. At Surry Central High School, he wore many hats: carpentry and special education teacher, wrestling, tennis, softball, and assistant football coach. He poured his energy into shaping young minds and building character in students through sport and education. Under his leadership, he coached three state champion wrestlers — a first in the school’s history — and left behind a legacy of discipline, sportsmanship, and integrity.
Yet, even with all his accolades, Bill remained deeply humble. He found joy in life’s simple pleasures — visiting antique malls, walking through flea markets with his wife, and spending time with the children in his church, who always brought a smile to his face. His 55-year marriage to Patricia, his high school sweetheart, was a love story admired by all. Theirs was a bond that defined what it meant to walk through life side by side, in faith and love.
A Final Goodbye: Honoring a Life of Purpose and Love
Those closest to Bill will never forget the twinkle in his eye, his infectious laugh, or the way he made everyone feel important. Left to cherish his memory are his beloved wife, Patricia McCollum Jenkins, son Joseph “Joey” Allan Jenkins and wife Kimberly, granddaughters Lauren Brantley (Josh) and Leslie Stouffer (Jordan), and great-granddaughter JosieLynn Brantley. He is reunited in heaven with his parents, sister Wanda Ann Trivette, and brother James “Allen” Jenkins.
A visitation will be held Tuesday, September 2, 2025, at Welcome Valley Baptist Church from 6:00 – 8:00 PM, with the funeral service on Wednesday, September 3 at 2:00 PM, led by multiple beloved pastors who were touched by Bill’s ministry. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests a tree be planted in his memory — a fitting tribute for a man who sowed so many seeds of faith, love, and community.
Moody-Davis Funeral Service in Dobson is honored to serve the Jenkins family.
