The streets of Uptown have been shaken to their core following the tragic death of 17-year-old Kahlif Norwood, who was shot and killed this past Sunday night. Known for his charisma, intelligence, and a budding dream of becoming a rapper, Kahlif’s life was cut short in a senseless act of violence that has left his family, friends, and mentors devastated.
Kahlif had already endured violence once before, having survived a shooting in 2023. That earlier experience gave him a new outlook on life — he spoke about turning away from the streets, embracing faith, and chasing his passion for music. Sadly, the young man who once inspired others to rise above struggle has now become another victim of the very violence he hoped to escape.
A Second Chance Stolen: From Survival to Tragedy
On Sunday, September 14, around 10:20 p.m., police say Kahlif was standing in an alley behind the 5000 block of North Winthrop when he was approached by a group of eight males. Without warning, one suspect drew a firearm and opened fire, striking Kahlif multiple times. He was rushed to Illinois Masonic Hospital, but tragically, his injuries proved fatal.
This was not Kahlif’s first encounter with gun violence. At just 15 years old, he had been shot in the leg near the Argyle Red Line station. Despite the trauma, he spoke openly to his mentor, Justin Peters, about leaving the streets behind and focusing on a brighter future. Peters recalls spending hours with Kahlif in the hospital, where the young man shared dreams of pursuing rap and inspiring others. That dream was stolen in an instant, leaving a deep wound in the hearts of those who knew him.
A Life That Inspired, A Loss That Demands Change
Justin Peters, founder of Chitown Crime Chasers, described Kahlif as a natural leader within their youth program. Despite his challenges, he often encouraged younger kids to make better choices, offering wisdom beyond his years. Peters reflected with heartbreak: “This devastating news has utterly broken my heart. I feel as though I have let him down.”
Kahlif’s death marks the first homicide in Uptown for 2025 and underscores the ongoing crisis of gun violence that continues to claim young lives far too soon.
