A pivotal moment came in 1962 when mezzo-soprano Jennie Tourel arranged a private audition with Leonard Bernstein. This led to a televised Young People’s Concert performance that catapulted Karr into fame. So impressed was Olga Koussevitzky, widow of the legendary bassist and conductor Serge Koussevitzky, that she gifted Gary her husband’s historic Amati bass—an act symbolic of the torch being passed.
