A motorcyclist killed in a highway crash in northwest Calgary over the weekend was trying to change lanes to avoid road construction.

Emergency crews were called to the southbound lanes of Stoney Trail near Crowchild Trail NW around 1:40 p.m. for reports of a single-vehicle crash.

Calgary police say a 2017 Kawasaki motorcycle was heading southbound in the middle lane of Stoney Trail, approaching construction in the middle and right lanes at the Crowchild overpass.

The motorcycle lost control while trying to move over to the left lane, according to police.

The rider, a man in his 40s, fell from the bike and was injured. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation into the collision is ongoing, but police say speed or impairment are not believed to be factors.
