A Champion On and Off the Court

The town of Zillah is grieving the loss of one of its brightest lights. Brandie Valadez (Bounds), 41, passed away Wednesday morning, August 6, 2025, after an extraordinary 11-year battle with cancer. Born on December 22, 1983, to Jay and Dennielle Bounds, Brandie’s life was defined by dedication, perseverance, and a deep love for her community. From an early age, she shined as a scholar-athlete, winning two state softball championships and earning state trophies in basketball and volleyball. Her achievements earned her a full-ride Division I athletic scholarship at Eastern Washington University, where she continued to excel academically and athletically, later earning a Master’s Degree in Education.

For the past 14 years, she poured her passion into the Zillah School District, touching the lives of countless students. As Head Coach of the Zillah High School Girls Basketball Program, she led her teams to more than 270 varsity wins, several state trophies, and—most importantly—shaped young women into leaders, both on and off the court.

A Legacy of Love, Strength, and Family

Beyond her achievements, Brandie’s greatest pride was her family. She married her high school sweetheart, Armando, on July 5, 2008. Together they raised two daughters, Bella and Berklie, who were the center of her world. Coaching Bella in basketball last season was a dream fulfilled—one she cherished every moment of. Her personal motto, “If things get tough, figure it out… and #BStrong doing it”, was more than a phrase; it was a way of life that inspired her players, friends, and community to face challenges head-on.

She is survived by her husband, daughters, father Jay Bounds, brother Brent Bounds, sister Brooke Bounds, and her beloved “Nana Nora and Poppa Mondo,” who she called her second parents. She was preceded in death by her mother, Dennielle Bounds.

Forever #BStrong

Brandie’s dedication to community and sport was so profound that the City of Zillah officially named its annual summer 3-on-3 basketball tournament the BStrong 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament in her honor. It is a lasting tribute to a woman whose grit, leadership, and love have left an indelible mark on all who knew her.

Her celebration of life will be held at Zillah Middle School Gymnasium on August 16 at 1:00 p.m., followed by a social where attendees are encouraged to wear pink or her iconic BStrong t-shirts. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to her family through Venmo or in person at the service.

Brandie Valadez’s story is one of courage, resilience, and boundless love. She was more than a coach, teacher, or athlete—she was a pillar of strength, a friend to many, and an inspiration to all. While cancer may have taken her from this world, her spirit will live forever in the hearts of her family, friends, and the community she so fiercely loved.
