A Day of Joy Turns to Tragedy for the Veasy Family
What began as one of the happiest days in the life of Nancy Veasy ended in unthinkable heartbreak. The 76-year-old from South Fulton, Georgia, had just spent the day in Douglasville meeting and holding her newborn grandson, Jaxon, for the very first time. She never put him down, savoring every precious moment. As she headed home to enjoy a concert with her husband of 56 years, Cloys Veasy, tragedy struck.
Nancy’s car was hit by a driver who was allegedly weaving in and out of traffic before losing control, going airborne, and crossing the median. The impact claimed Nancy’s life instantly and also killed another motorist in a separate vehicle. Her son, Japhet Veasy, who had been following behind but got stuck in traffic, arrived at the crash scene only to face the devastating reality that his beloved mother was gone. “She was my best friend,” Japhet said, describing the deep bond they shared.
A Life Defined by Love, Service, and Dedication
Nancy’s life was filled with love, selflessness, and purpose. Over the years, she worked as an elementary school teacher’s assistant, a machinery mechanic at Miller Brewing Company, and even as an 18-wheel truck driver before retiring. Her hands were always busy crafting love into tangible gifts—hand-sewn quilts for her three children, eight grandchildren, and three identical triplet great-grandchildren.
For the last nine years, Nancy volunteered in her church’s baby room, cradling and caring for newborns every Sunday. “She was a light,” her daughter Ameera Joe shared. “My mom had a big heart. She was always giving and trying to be there for everybody,” added her eldest daughter, Anita Wellington. This generosity and warmth were reflected in the overwhelming turnout at her funeral, where 500 mourners gathered—far exceeding the 200 her family expected—to honor her memory.
A Call for Justice and Road Safety
The South Fulton Police Department confirmed on August 14 that warrants have been issued in connection with the crash, but no arrest has been made and the driver’s name has not been released. The driver’s alleged recklessness has left Nancy’s family grappling not only with grief but also with the painful reality that justice has not yet been served.
Her daughter Ameera voiced the family’s struggle: “I’m struggling with the fact this person is not in jail and he just killed my mother… but I’m trying to find grace.” The Veasy family’s loss is a stark reminder of how dangerous reckless driving can be, and how one person’s actions can devastate entire families.
