Newark, Arkansas – The entire Independence County community is mourning the loss of Mr. Robert Taylor Griffin, who passed away on Sunday, August 24, 2025, at the age of 70. Known as a devoted family man, respected leader, and passionate advocate for education and local growth, Mr. Griffin’s sudden departure has left an irreplaceable void in the hearts of those who knew and loved him.
Born on August 29, 1954, in Newport, Robert lived a life dedicated to service, family, and faith. After graduating from Newark High School and earning a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Lyon College, Robert went on to make countless contributions to his hometown and beyond. His legacy is woven deeply into the fabric of Newark—a testament to his hard work, integrity, and selfless character.
“A Life Devoted to Family, Faith, and Service”
On May 2, 1975, Robert married the love of his life, Gayla Nauman, and together they shared more than 50 beautiful years of marriage. Their love story was one built on partnership and devotion, raising their daughter Natalie and later cherishing the joy of a grandson, Townes. For Robert, family was everything.
Beyond his personal life, Robert was a man of great vision and community spirit. He served as a row crop farmer and cattle producer, owning and operating Griffin Seed and Grain Company for many years. His influence extended beyond farming—Robert passionately supported youth development, coaching peewee basketball and softball teams and serving on the Newark/Cedar Ridge School Board for three terms. His heart for education and mentorship touched countless young lives.

Robert’s commitment to public service culminated in his election as Independence County Judge, a position he held for five consecutive terms, serving for 12 years. During his tenure, he spearheaded initiatives that strengthened infrastructure, improved public services, and enhanced the quality of life for countless residents.
Outside his official duties, Robert was known for his warm personality, sharp sense of humor, and love for simple joys—whether playing Texas Hold’em, hunting, or sharing laughter with those he loved. His unwavering faith as a member of Newark First Baptist Church grounded him and guided every step of his life.
Though preceded in death by his parents and brother Frankie, Robert leaves behind a devoted family, including his wife Gayla, daughter Natalie, son-in-law Cale, grandson Townes, and a host of relatives and friends who will carry his memory forward.
