Joseph John Miller, Jr., 87, of Edison, NJ, led a life defined by service, community, and passion. Born on April 2, 1938, in Raritan Township, Joe grew up with a love for sports and camaraderie. A proud graduate of Perth Amboy High School, he cherished memories of playing baseball, including the time he famously stole home plate—a story he delighted in sharing with family and friends. Following high school, Joe answered the call to serve his country in the United States Navy as a Radioman Third Class aboard the USS Salem. His time in the Mediterranean and in France left him with lifelong stories and friendships, and in 2008 he had the joy of revisiting the USS Salem alongside his family, reliving those treasured memories.

Beyond his service, Joe was a devoted family man whose love and warmth touched everyone he met. He is survived by his beloved wife, Rhoda, his children Christian, Jill, and Jessica, and his grandchildren Jordan, James, and Olivia. His sister, Rosemarie “Mitzi” Surma, also remembers him fondly. Joe enjoyed simple pleasures: listening to Green Bay Packers games, rooting for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and reminiscing about the Brooklyn Dodgers. Family vacations in Wildwood were highlights, especially his early morning walks along the beach with a metal detector, hunting for hidden treasures. These moments reflect the joy he found in life’s small wonders and his deep connection to family and community.
